Warms the Intestines and calms roundworms
Jue-Yin syndrome: Clears Heat from the upper Jiao and warms the lower and middle Jiao. Expels roundworms
Indications
- Intermittent attacks of abdominal pain
- A stifling sensation, irritability and warmth in the chest and epigastrium accompanied by vomiting after eating
- Vomiting of roundworms (classically)
- Cold hands and feet
- Or incessant diarrhoea, abdominal pain eased by pressure or heat
- Borborygmus
- A red tongue with a white coating
- Jue-Yin syndrome
- Cold below and Heat above (Spleen and Kidney Yang deficiency with heat in the upper Jiao)
Formula
- Mu Wei (chief) is very sour and effective at eliminating roundworms.
- Chuan Jiao and Xi Xin (deputies) are warm and expel parasites and warm the organs.
- Huang Lian and Huang Bai (deputies) are cold and bitter and attack the worms.
- Gan Jiang, Fu Zi and Gui Zhi (assistants) warm the Interior and dispel internal Cold.
- Gui Zhi and Xi Xin promote the flow of Yang Qi and disperse internal Cold.
- Dang Shen and Dang Gui tonify Qi and nourish Blood to prevent further injury to the normal Qi.
Adaptations
- No Cold symptoms: omit Fu Zi and Gui Zhi
- If normal Qi is intact: omit Dang Shen and Dang Gui
- Severe abdominal pain: add Chuan Lian Zi and Mu Xiang
- Constipation: add Bing Lang and Zhi Zi
- Severe vomiting: add Wu Zhu Yu and Ban Xia
- Chronic dysenteric diarrhoea: omit Huang Bai and Dang Shen, and swap Gui Zhi for Rou Gui
- Roundworms in the bile-duct: add Shi Jun Zi and Ku Lian Gen Pi
- Chronic dysentery: add Mu Xiang and Bai Shao
Discussion
- The formula is distinctive in its use of both Hot and Cold substances, and addressing both the pathogen (worms) and normal Qi.
- The formula is useful in treating diarrhoea or dysentery, which involves a mixture of hot and cold symptoms and weakened normal Qi.
- It is appropriate for ascariasis, roundworms in the bile duct, chronic gastroenteritis, post-gastrectomy syndrome, colitis or chronic dysentery with the right presentation.
Cautions & Contraindications
Contraindicated for explosive diarrhoea or Damp-Heat dysenteric disorders.
